Keeping Hope Possible
An ePortal Resource for Parents
1.
Accepting Reality
Parents have stated that they had to accept their child’s diagnosis and the resulting care protocol. As one parent explained, “if you don’t accept it, you can’t have hope for what’s going to happen in the future.”
2.
Establishing Control
This section consists of activities that address the process of establishing control. Other parents felt that once they accepted their situation, they were able to focus on their child and the journey ahead of them. As a parent explained, “tomorrow is not promised to any of us, so I think at this point we just go day by day, and hope for the best. I think that no matter what, hope helps you get through it.”
3.
Restructuring Your Hope
This section consists of activities that address your hope. After accepting reality and establishing some control, parents were able to restructure their hope to keep it possible and to resolve their fear of losing hope. One parent describing her ability to restructure her specific hopes said that “in the beginning, my hopes were centered around the next few hours, and they were focused. Now it is about the next year, I hope his energy levels get back up, and his scans will still be clean.”
4.
Postive Thinking
This section consists of activities that address the process of purposive positive thinking. After restructuring their hope, parents described being able to find a positive side in their situation. As one parent confided, “your mind can focus on the negative, but you need hope to focus on the positive. If you don’t have hope, then there is no positive.”
To Begin
This ePortal Resource is meant to be easy to use, responsive, and flexible. It is meant to support you through your unique journey with your child. Hope is thought to be an important aspect of your health and well- being, and this ePortal may help you to keep your hope possible by reflecting on your emotional responses, your own health, and your child’s journey. You will be encouraged to find creative and helpful ways to manage your experience and keep your hope possible. The KHP ePortal is made up of four different sections and it is up to you to choose which section(s) might be most helpful to you at any given time. Within each of the four sections, you will find specific activities meant to suit the unique and different needs of all parents at different times during their experience.
